My “why,” is the students in my classroom. I come to work everyday asking myself how I can reach and make a connection with a different student everyday. I first always start with getting to know all about my students in the first couple of weeks. I make contact with their parents and find things out about each of them on a personal basis. I find out their likes and interests and really try to get to know them. Some of my students have been through things I could never imagine and I want them to feel safe with me and know I’m here for them no matter what. I always find my most troubled students are the ones I end up connecting with the most. How will you incorporate elements of the COVA model into your ePortfolio? I plan on incorporating the COVA model into my ePortfolio by choosing what I like and being authentic by makung my page relate to me and what I like, not what I think others will want. Our eportfolio should describe us and someone looking at it should be able to know a little it about you and what your interests and goals are. What factors would contribute to ePortfolio persistence beyond your program of study? Beyond just this class and others I plan on using my ePortfolio by updating all of the information I find interesting and useful in my field of study. I will use it to store the things that are shared with me and the things I found valuable in my course studies. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned thus far in the Ed Tech/DLL program? I would say the most valuable lesson I learned so far was working on having a growth mindset and not a fixed mindset. I think it is so important to have a growth mindset and I love introducing the idea of growth mindset to my students and fellow colleagues in hopes that they too will love the idea and realize the importance of it and the importance the power of “yet”. I love the idea of the COVA approach also. It makes and pushes everyone to try for more than just enough. It makes people push to have choice, ownership, voice, and be authentic in everything they do. Dweck, Carol S. Ph.D. (2006). Mindset the new psychology of success. NY: Ballantine Books. Gross-Loh, Christine. “How Praise Became a Consolation Prize.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 16 Dec. 2016, www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/12/how-praise-became-a-consolation-prize/510845/. I believe “yet” is a word to express a progression on the given concept and it allows them time to learn and grasp the idea without feeling like a failure. “Yet” also signifies that we may not have the task down “yet,” but it will and can be done eventually with a growth mindset. Growth Mindset will change your philosophy because there won’t be that rollercoaster ride from” I’m awesome at this” to “I’m horrible at this.” It’s looking at strategies in smaller manageable chunks that are capable for you. It makes you want to take on challenges and not fear failure but know you will eventually succeed not matter what. Feedback will be welcoming because they know they will not ever fail and their efforts won’t go unnoticed. They will be praised for all their efforts and not just when they have completed the given task. I believe it could change the preoccupation with grades because it puts more emphasis on the learning process instead of the grade achieved. For example “ Is this good enough for an A” to using the growth mindset of “ It this my best work.” With the growth mind of “mistakes help me learn” it helps us to not focus on the grade earned but that mistakes are a natural component of the learning process. The difference between fixed verses growth mindset is that when you are in a growth mindset you will accomplish so much more than you ever thought possible because you are not worried about mistakes, time, or grades. You are focused on the learning process and how you will achieve the task at hand through efforts and mistakes. You will want to keep trying and not give up liked you would if you had a fixed mindset. My students and I really enjoy watching these videos.
