In my classroom it is very important that I help my students to develop a growth mindset. I have previously made a plan but I am continuously adding to it as I learn more about having a growth mindset. I will continue following my original plan by still helping my students develop their growth mindset by watching video clips and reading books about having a growth mindset. I will also continue correcting their phrases of “I can’t” and “I quit” to “I can’t do this yet” and “mistakes are a chance to learn.”
Getting the message of “yet” across to my students is a struggle for some. The more engaged students seem to be using the vocabulary more in their day to day discussions. The acceptance of feedback and the student’s attitude toward cheating is getting better. I have realized I have a lot less cheating and more of my students trying harder for the correct response or outcome rather than going to their friends for the answers. They are showing me that they have grit and they do not want to give up instead they want to learn and come up with questions that help them with their learning process. In kindergarten my students have yet to really worry about grades so my hope is to build grit into my students before they start to worry. When my students have grit they will realize they are not learning if it is easy for them. Learning comes from trying and failing and then learning from those mistakes. I hope that the growth mindset doesn't fade away with all of the other fads we go through in the educational process. We need to make sure our students know that its all about what they learn from their mistakes that matters and not what grade they got. We as teachers need to also look at their level of grit and growth mindset rather than the grade they get.
The biggest part of my growth mindset plan that is still a struggle is getting my self to have a growth mindset and remembering the power of "yet." I need to make sure I work on it and make sure I show the proof that I am so my students can see the positive influence it has on learning and in life. I feel all to often we get overwhelmed with what is happening in life and we try to take the easy way out instead of taking the hard way and learning from it.
